Words for the overall rating: from 8.0 excellentfrom 6.5 strongfrom 5.0 solidfrom 3.5 modestlow

  • With equal overall ratings, the higher repairability index comes first, then the newer model (market start), then the name.
  • Unusual figures marked “!” count at the category’s typical value, never more.
  • Where class and index do not match, the index counts at most up to the limit of the registered class.
  • A missing figure counts as 0 points.
  • “!” next to a value: battery life below 5 or above 300 hours, more than 15 years of updates or 5,000 or more charge cycles. Values unchanged, last when sorting by that value.
  • For 48 of 1,075 models, class and index do not match under the thresholds of Regulation (EU) 2023/1669, Annex II (“!” next to the class); both values are shown unchanged.

Our own editorial rating with a disclosed method, not the official class from the energy label. The values come from the suppliers in EPREL (European Commission), who are solely responsible for them; the Commission does not endorse the ranking.

How we choose the favourites

  • Favourites come only from devices with their own device page (confirmed sales name or well-known consumer brand), and each is from a different brand.
  • Our favourite: the highest overall rating.
  • Best for battery replacement: the highest overall rating among devices whose battery you can replace yourself, according to the supplier.
  • Longest updates: the most years of software updates among devices with an overall rating of 5 or more; on a tie, the higher overall rating.
  • If a rule drops out, the next one applies: longest battery life, then most charge cycles, each among devices with an overall rating of 5 or more.
  • After the favourite, the first two rules that find a suitable device apply. A rule drops out if it applies equally to every device on the page. If a rule finds no suitable device, its card is left out, so fewer than three favourites may appear. On topic and brand pages, the rules apply to the filtered list; on brand pages without the different-brand condition. Nobody can buy a place as a favourite.

Icons in the list: green means at least the typical value in the category (median), grey means below. Our own calculation from the data; the values themselves are unchanged.

Compared: 583 smartphones, only models with EU class A or B and at least 3 more years of updates in EPREL, all suppliers. Source: EPREL, European Commission, data from the suppliers, as of 2 November 2026, updated weekly. Order: overall rating from 8 factors, our own rating; only models with EU class A or B and at least 3 more years of updates.

Frequently asked questions

Which smartphone is the best fit as a used device?

In our overall rating, Gigaset GS6 Enterprise comes first (8.0 out of 10, EU class A). The data comes from the suppliers in EPREL; we reload it every week.

How is the overall rating calculated?

From 8 figures in EPREL with fixed weights: Repairability 35%, Updates 20%, Replaceable battery 10%, Charge cycles 10%, Drops 10%, Battery life 5%, Water 5%, Scratches 5%. Each factor gets 0 to 10 points on a fixed scale. The overall rating is our own rating, not the official class.

Where does the data come from?

From EPREL, the European Commission’s product database. Suppliers register each model themselves before placing it on the market and are responsible for the data. We reload it every week.

For sellers

If you sell smartphones to EU consumers, show the repairability class on the product page before purchase (Article 6(1)(u) of Directive 2011/83/EU). For a single model, the EPREL lookup finds it. The Shopify app takes class and index for each product from EPREL.
